IAIN FRASER BIOGRAPHY
Born in Canada, Fraser first came to the United States to study architecture, receiving his
Bachelor of Architecture from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC and his Master of
Architecture from Washington University, St. Louis, MO.
Since 1976, Fraser has been a professor of Architecture at Washington University. From
1979-1982 he was Assistant Dean and was awarded tenure in 1988. From 2000 to present,
Fraser has been the Director of the Undergraduate Program of the Sam Fox School of Design and
Visual Art and has created numerous innovative programs including the Summer Study Abroad;
Architectural Discovery Program and the Florence Program for International Study.
In 1980, upon winning a competition to design and carry out a ski resort in Steamboat Springs,CO,
Fraser founded the architecture firm of Fraser, Thomson and Associates. The practice
focused on institutional and civic buildings, universities and churches and some residential work.
In 1994, Fraser co-authored a book, Envisioning Architecture (with Rod K. Henmi), which has
also been published in Chinese, on the use of drawing by architects during the creative process.
Fraser has lectured extensively on architecture, urban public space and the relationship between
forms of representation, bodies of knowledge and creative imagination.
Travelling extensively in Europe, over his lifetime, Fraser has actively studied the integration of
the artistic endeavor in the built environment in varied cultures.
Beginning in 2000, Fraser has been combining his considerable knowledge of the expressive
potential of building materials with creative speculation and experimentation to make three
dimensional constructions using steel, wood, glass and concrete. He has exhibited his work
throughout Missouri and the midwest.
